Run, Ramble, and Roll
Today was one of those great running days. The weather was a bit warm and the wind blew,
but the sun was shining and I was running with some really great people. I imagine there were 40-50 runners and walkers today, and 1/3 of them were SRRC members - how cool is that?! Last year, there were only half as many participants and it rained and rained and rained! I'm sure the college will count this 2nd annual 5K race a success in terms of dollars raised and in participation!
The 5K at Lincoln College raises money for scholarships which are awarded to deserving students, many of whom rely on financial assistance in order to keep working toward their goals. I like that many of the races we do have another purpose. Sure, we run to beat the clock, the race other opponents, to improve our times and our own strength, and of course, to eat and drink, but what we do has consequences far beyond the finish line. I've tutored many students over the years at Lincoln College and I see the impact of fundraisers such as today's run on students. As a graduate of Lincoln College and having received some scholarships myself, I am glad to be able to do something to give back.
Almost all of the local races we run do support worthwhile causes - and it while we tend to be competitive and get wrapped up with our own goals, we forget that we aren't just running for ourselves. My first race was the Women's Distance Festival in 2005 and I just happened to stop and look at the Girls on the Run booth. It was then I realized that while I may not be a great runner, I can turn my running into something that's not just about me. Since then, I've coached 4 seasons of GOTR, ran the WDF twice, and raised funds for these girls in my first marathon. I like making a difference - and if I can run for those whose can't or for those who just need a little help along the way - then I will continue to toe the starting line.
The next time you sign up for a race - find out who the race benefits. Take time to learn about the sponsers. The only person who is really counting on a certain finishing time is you - those for whom the race benefits are just counting on you showing up.
Thank you thank you thank you to all the SRRC members who came up to Lincoln for the race. Great weather, awesome food, and the power of the group.............

PS - those who didn't get shirts be sure to send me an email and I'll get them to you. Watch for pictures later!
